Paintings of Worcestershire
Worcesterbella is a collaboration between Collette Knibb, Photographer, and Artist, Marion Yeo. who uses Collette’s photographs as inspiration to create paintings of Worcestershire.
You can see Collette’s photos on her instagram profile and more of Marion’s paintings here.

Worcester Cathedral swans painting
Collette has captured the swans and the cathedral in the reference photo I used for this painting. These are both well known features of Worcester. As well as the great composition, the lighting at sunrise makes the scene more dramatic. In addition the early morning mist adds even more atmosphere.

Worcester itself is well known for it’s magnificent cathedral, and large swan sanctuary on the River Severn. These are favourite subjects for Collette Knibb. She photographs them at all times of the day and in all seasons.

Monet style Worcester Cathedral painting
I love the style of Claude Monet’s painting of the houses of parliament with the sun breaking through. It features the vibrant colours and small dabs of brightly coloured paint which Monet is particularly well known for. As I live in Worcester I decided to do a similar painting, but featuring Worcester Cathedral.

Worcestershire is a beautiful part of the UK with its balance of urban centres and scenic countryside.

Van Gogh style Cotswold lavender fields painting
This scene appeals to me because of the purple of the lavender and the lines of perspective. I felt it would suit a Van Gogh style, with patterns of lines and swirls in different directions. Unlike Van Gogh, I painted this in acrylic rather than oils. However, I added some heavy structure gel to the paint to create texture.

Worcester Cathedral at dawn painting
Collette’s reference photo for this painting stood out to me because it is dramatic and mysterious. It reminds me of paintings by J M W Turner. Although this is darker than most of Turner’s paintings, I tried to use his misty style.

St Nicholas Street, Worcester painting
I painted this for a Worcester Society of Artists project where we shared and discussed our cityscape paintings. I’ve lived in Worcester for quite a long time and feel very attached to the place as it’s where I’ve had my children and met some good people. Certain views around the city represent its character to me, and St Nicholas Church, which is now the Slug and Lettuce pub and the Courtyard building are some of those. I like atmospheric lighting and wait for days when the lighting is good to take photopgraphs which I use for art reference and then paint from at home. The painting is not entirely realistic as I’ve used a lot of my favourite purple for the darker areas, just because I like the look of it, and I’ve left unrefined brushstrokes to try to make it look ‘painterly’ rather than photographic.

Worcestershire has some very nice National Trust properties. Here are a few paintings inspired by my visits to some of them:

Brockhampton Estate landscape painting
I enjoyed painting the harmonious colours of the English countryside and brooding grey sky.

Brockhampton Estate English landscape painting
When I saw this scene it seemed so characteristic of the English countryside.

Apple tree at Croft Castle painting
The inspiration for this painting was an apple tree in the National Trust grounds of Croft Castle, Herefordshire. When I took the reference photograph, it was one of those special moments when the sunlight was just right, the colours of the season were interesting, and the composition, with some apples on the tree and some on the ground, was pleasing. It looked like it should be a painting.

Sabrina at the grotto sculpture, Croome Court painting
This is a painting based on the Sabrina at the Grotto sculpture at the National Trust’s Croome Court, Worcestershire. I like her feminine and serene look. In the painting I wanted to make the most important part of the subject stand out by painting it in warmer colours and making it look in sharper focus than the rest.

Portrait of a druid, stone sculpture at Croome Park painting
Looking up at this sculpture in the National Trust’s Croome Park, it seemed dramatic and imposing. I thought the druid had an interesting face to paint a portrait from, and that it would also be interesting to work on making it look like it was made of stone.

There are some attractive parks around Worcester City including Gheluvelt Park, Cripplegate Park and Fort Royal Hill Park.

Gheluvelt Park, Worcester painting
I started this painting outside. The weather was very hot and the light was bright, making the colours and contrasts intense. When I came to finish the painting at home I just didn’t feel the same excitement about it that I felt outside. I changed the style of it to look more like a Van Gogh painting because I love that style and it gave me more enthusiasm. I found that this style did express more of how I felt when I was actually there than if I had just painted it ‘straight’.

In more traditional style here are a couple of watercolour paintings of the cathedral. Both are the same view, but with different colour schemes:

The next 2 paintings may not be recognisable to many people but are very close to my home in Barbourne, Worcester. One is the road at the front of my house and one is the view of the backstreets behind.

Flag Meadow Walk, Worcester painting
This is the road at the front of my house. As I was walking home everything suddenly lit up with a dramatic light. The sky was grey with light streaming through a gap casting a yellowish glow on things and creating high contrast shadows. These fleeting moments are beautiful and it felt good to capture them in a painting.

Somerset Place, Worcester painting
This is the view from my daughter’s bedroom. These back streets may not be an obvious subject for a painting, but if you look at the view as though it was an abstract painting, the way the shapes fit together, the angles and directions created by the lines of perspective, and the colours, the picture seems quite pleasing to me. I’ve kept the colours quite simple with a mixture of cold and warm colours. Although outside was cold and getting dark, there was also a glow of warmth from the colours of the sun setting and warm looking light coming from lights on inside buildings.
